Tips to Memorize the Holy Quran Memorizing the Holy Quran is one of the greatest achievements any Muslim could fulfil. We all aspire to do so, but it might seem a little challenging. Here are a few tips that will help ease this amazing spiritual journey: 1. Purpose It is much easier for you to remember your mother’s favourite song than what she wore two days before, right? It is all about meaning and purpose. Our minds always tend to remember elements of greater importance or considerable outcomes. You will find memorizing the Quran much easier when you assign elements of purpose and importance to it. That said, here are some points to take into consideration: - The Quran helps us get closer to Allah (SWT), hence closer to attain Paradise. - It explains our great purpose of life. - It gives us values that will make life much easier when following them. - It teaches us the life-history of Prophets so we can learn from them. The greater the purpose of the Quran to you, the easier it gets to memorize it. 2. Reciting and Rehearsing It is scientifically proven that speaking out loud truly helps in memorizing written texts. A great tip to follow in order to memorize the Quran is to read it out loud, for as many times as you need. You also need to take your time and read it carefully and slowly. Tajweed will help your brain memorize, too. The Holy Quran was originally revealed orally and was written afterwards to maintain it. So, it makes great sense that reading it out loud, with focus will help memorize it efficiently. 3. Understand the Text Memorizing a letter from your friend in your native language is much easier than memorizing a Shakespearean text, right? Understanding the context is a crucial step. That is why it is of the utmost importance to be able to understand and use Arabic language in order to memorize the Quran, because it will be your key to grasp the words of Allah (SWT). Already familiar with Arabic? Great! Now to the easier part: understanding the Tafseer (Quran Interpretation). The Holy Quran is a rather unique and rich scripture: its language is one of the most distinctive things about it. When you understand the meaning of Ayahs (verses) and the context of when they were revealed, it would be much easier to remember them. 4. Use It in Your Prayers Now that you memorized a certain portion of the Quran, why not use it in your Salah (prayer)? We already do that five times per day, so it would be a great opportunity to keep in mind, practice, and even gain Hassanat from what you already memorized. You should ask Allah Almighty for help, too. Pray that you gain the strength and will to and ask Allah (SWT) to aid you in this sacred mission. 5. Go Easy on Yourself You do not have to start with Al-Baqara or Yusuf. You can simply start with shorter Surahs because they are easier to remember, to understand, and to interpret. Start small: every Ayah (verse) counts! Allah (SWT) rewards Muslims for literally every letter recited. Moreover, it would be of great help if you consulted a Sheikh(a) and asked them to help you memorize and understand the Holy Quran.
